Safety culture is a fundamental aspect of Bluegrass Supply Chain that ensures the well-being of our team members and promotes a secure work environment. From prioritizing team member safety to reducing costs and maintaining regulatory compliance, our safety culture encompasses various vital components. In this blog post, we will explore the significance of safety culture, delve into the behavior-based safety system (BBS), examine BSC's training methods, and uncover additional elements contributing to our commitment to safety. Join us as we uncover the key factors that make BSC a leader in fostering a culture of safety and protection.
According to the National Safety Council, at least 85% of all workplace accidents result from unsafe employee behaviors. Bluegrass Supply Chain’s safety culture is designed to influence team members' actions toward safer outcomes, ideally by preventing an accident or injury before it occurs. Our behavior-based safety (BBS) program is the most comprehensive way to promote safety and compliance, eliminate hazards, and prevent injuries. A culture of safety is important for many reasons:
Team Member Safety:
A safety culture helps to protect team members from incidents and injuries by promoting safe work practices, identifying and addressing potential hazards, and providing appropriate safety equipment and training.
Reduced Costs:
A safety culture can help reduce costs associated with workplace incidents and injuries, such as medical expenses, workers' compensation claims, and lost productivity due to absences.
Compliance with Regulations:
Many industries are subject to safety regulations, and a safety culture can help ensure compliance with these regulations, avoiding penalties and legal issues.
Reputation:
A business with a strong safety culture is perceived as more responsible and trustworthy by team members, customers, and the public. This can lead to a better reputation, increased customer loyalty, and better recruitment of new team members.
Increased Productivity:
A safety culture can increase productivity, as team members feel more confident and secure in their work environment and are less likely to be distracted by safety concerns.
To create a culture of safety at Bluegrass Supply Chain, we employ a Behavior-Based Safety System (BBS). This approach to occupational safety emphasizes the importance of team members’ behavior in preventing workplace incidents and injuries. It is a proactive safety program that identifies and corrects unsafe behaviors and conditions before incidents occur. Multiple studies indicate that BBS systems lead to a significant reduction in workplace accidents.
Our Behavior-Based Safety system involves a range of strategies:
At Bluegrass Supply Chain, we utilize many modalities to deliver safety, compliance, skill development, and job training to all our team members, from executives to staff.
Learning Management System
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application or platform that enables the administration, delivery, and tracking of educational courses, training programs, or learning and development initiatives.
Our LMS provides an online platform where learners can access various digital learning materials such as videos, audio recordings, PDFs, online quizzes, and interactive simulations. Learners can access these materials from anywhere and anytime, using a computer or mobile device with an internet connection.
5S Workplace Organization
Bluegrass Supply Chain employs the 5S Workplace Organization method that creates a clean, efficient, and organized work environment. The 5S term stands for five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke, which are translated as Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.

Here’s a brief overview of each of the five steps:
In addition to safety benefits, this approach allows us to work more efficiently, reduce waste, improve quality, and boost morale.
Additional Components
Bluegrass Supply Chain also uses weekly safety calls to maintain focus and increase safety awareness. These calls are attended by the executives, managers, site supervisors, and staff. During these calls, the team interacts to review incidents, root cause analysis, and corrective actions. In addition, the calls provide safety information, education, key safety metrics, and best practices.
Monthly corporate safety reviews are conducted and attended by the executives. The purpose of this meeting is to review all incidents for the month and quarter and ensure we are identifying root causes and implementing both short-term and long-term countermeasures to reduce risk in our operations. The team also discusses additional training that needs to be developed and delivered to team members.

Our Behavior-Based Safety culture is also reflected in our dedicated transportation team, Bluegrass Dedicated. In addition to all the above, Bluegrass Dedicated employs a dedicated safety manager to monitor and maintain its FMSCA, DOT, and CSA 2010 regulatory compliance. Bluegrass Dedicated employs the latest technologies and training advancements to ensure driver safety.
Onboard Camera System
Bluegrass Dedicated trucks use Samsara onboard cameras. These cameras are designed to video record driving activities for commercial fleets. Using dual-facing cameras, HD video recording, AI technology, and real-time alerts, this technology allows fleet managers to identify safety risks, improve driver behavior, and reduce the likelihood of accidents and other incidents on the road.
Smith System Training
Bluegrass Dedicated utilizes the Smith System for training drivers on proper driving techniques and spatial awareness. It is a widely recognized and respected driver training program designed to help drivers develop safe driving habits and techniques. The system focuses on three primary goals: vehicle space, driver visibility, and decision-making time.
At Bluegrass Supply Chain, our safety culture is fundamental. It ensures the well-being of our team members and promotes a secure work environment. It allows us to prioritize team member safety, reduce costs, and maintain regulatory compliance, all while enhancing productivity. Our Behavior-Based Safety system (BBS) allows us to prevent workplace incidents and injuries by focusing on our team members' behavior and correcting unsafe practices before they occur.
We also employ various strategies such as utilizing a Learning Management System (LMS) for comprehensive training and implementing the 5S Workplace Organization method to create an efficient work environment. We conduct weekly safety calls and monthly corporate safety reviews to maintain safety awareness and implement necessary measures. Our transportation team, Bluegrass Dedicated, also strongly emphasizes driver safety by using onboard camera systems and implementing the Smith System training program.
By integrating these elements, we solidify our commitment to safety and protection, positioning ourselves as leaders in cultivating a culture of safety.
